Alliance is a daughter of Whitbread Golding and was developed at Wye College alongside Progress in the early 1960’s. It is not known to be grown commercially anywhere at this time. It enjoyed a high yield in England but this was much more inconsistent in US plots. Originally bred to replace Fuggle, but after it resulted in only a marginal improvement the variety was deemed a failure.
